It's not a situation you may wish to think about... your child having an unexpected convulsion. Whether your child (or a neighbour's child) is known to have convulsions or not, if YOU know some basic first aid, you can do what is required to ensure the child's safety and your own peace of mind.

St John, Australia's leading first aid trainer, advises the following:

Infantile Convulsions — Signs & Symptoms

  • fever

  • twitching of face or limbs

  • eyes rolling up

  • congestion of face and neck

  • blue face and lips

  • stiffness of body with arched back

  • unconsciousness

WARNING — Do not cool child by sponging or bathing.

Management of Convulsions

1 During convulsions

  • place child on floor for safety

  • do not restrain child.

2 After convulsions:

  • follow DRABC

  • turn child on side

  • remove excessive clothing or wrapping

  • seek medical aid.

St John recommends that at least one person in every household is trained in first aid and every home contains an up-to-date first aid kit.
