Program To Aid Literacy Course

 

St John (NSW) runs Program To Aid Literacy courses (PALs) for parents, grandparents or family friends who want to improve a student's literacy skills.

 

The course runs over four days at locations across NSW.

Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Identify the processes involved in acquiring literacy;
  • Describe the type of learning experiences encountered by the child at school; and
  • Identify characteristics of a proficient reader and demonstrate practical strategies to help a child.

 

Certification is issued on successful completion.

 

Fundamentals of PALs

  • Foster a supportive relationship that builds students' strengths while developing confidence and self-esteem.
  • Integrate the strands of the K-6 English Syllabus (DET NSW), ie reading, writing, talking and listening.
  • Utilise a range of strategies to support beginning literacy learners.
  • Access a variety of text to meet students' needs and interests.

 

Course Costs

The standard price of the PAL course is $25, however sometimes courses are available at discounted rates when external funding is available.

 

Program to Aid Literacy (PALs™)

On completion of the Program to Aid Literacy Course, participants will be given the opportunity to apply to join the St John Program to Aid Literacy (PALs™), a volunteer program aimed at assisting students in primary schools to develop their literacy skills.
