Early Literacy Outcomes
Participants will:
- Identify the processes involved in acquiring literacy;
- Describe the type of learning experiences encountered by the child at school; and
- Identify characteristics of a proficient reader and demonstrate practical strategies to help a child.
Certification is issued on successful completion of an PAL.
Fundamentals of PALs
- Foster a supportive relationship that builds students' strengths while developing confidence and self-esteem.
- Integrate the strands of the K-6 English Syllabus (DET NSW), ie reading, writing, talking and listening.
- Utilise a range of strategies to support beginning literacy learners.
- Access a variety of text to meet students' needs and interests.
Course Costs
The standard price of the PAL course is $25, however sometimes courses are available at discounted rates when external funding is available.
Program to Aid Literacy (PALs)
On completion of the Program to Aid Literacy Course, participants will be given the opportunity to apply to join the St John Program to Aid Literacy (PALs), a volunteer program aimed at assisting students in primary schools to develop their literacy skills.
