Program to Aid Literacy (PALs™)

The Program to Aid Literacy (PALs™) is a volunteer program designed to help primary school students experiencing problems with reading and writing.

PALs™ operates in primary schools across NSW, linking volunteers with a student who needs that extra bit of help with learning. Volunteers spend an hour a week during school time assisting children one on one, or in small groups.

PALs™ volunteers who have been participating in the program for a number of years find it extremely rewarding to provide that additional help to a student learning to read and write.

Eligibility for PALs™ membership (screening process and age restriction):

  • Must be minimum 18 years of age
  • Must successfully complete the Program To Aid Literacy Course
  • Reference checks
  • Subject to Criminal Record Check clearance
  • Must sign a prohibited employment declaration.

People undertake the St John Program To Aid Literacy Course so that they can become volunteers and use their new skills to help students. Mums, dads and grandparents are also encouraged to complete the course so that they can help their own young ones.
